What is this tool?

File Transfer lets you move files between your own devices — for example from your phone to your laptop — without cables, cloud storage or instant messengers. Both devices open this page, connect with a short room code, and files travel directly between them.

The transfer uses WebRTC, the same technology behind video calls, so data is end-to-end encrypted and goes straight from device to device. Nothing is stored, and there are no accounts or size limits.

How to transfer files

You need both devices online at the same time, each with this page open.

  • On the sending device, click Create a room — you get a 6-character code and a QR code.
  • On the receiving device, scan the QR code with the camera, open the shared link, or type the code into Join a room.
  • Wait until the page shows that a device is connected.
  • Drag files into the drop area or click to choose them — the transfer starts automatically and the file downloads on the other device.

Tips

  • Keep both tabs open until every transfer shows as complete.
  • On the same Wi-Fi network, transfers are fastest and never use mobile data.
  • If the connection drops, create a new room and continue with the remaining files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?+
No. Files are transferred directly from one device to the other over an encrypted WebRTC connection. Only tiny connection-setup messages pass through public relays — your file data never touches any server.
Do both devices need to be on the same network?+
No. The transfer works anywhere both devices are online, even on different networks. When both are on the same Wi-Fi, transfers are usually faster because the data stays on your local network.
What is the maximum file size?+
There is no built-in limit. Files are held in the browser's memory during transfer, so very large files (several GB) depend on the receiving device's available memory. For best results, keep single transfers under 2 GB.
Is the transfer secure?+
Yes. The connection is end-to-end encrypted (DTLS), and only someone who knows your 6-character room code can join. The code is generated randomly on your device.
Which devices are supported?+
Any modern browser works — Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop, Android and iOS. No app installation needed; the other device just scans the QR code or opens the link.
