What Is an Image Histogram?
An image histogram charts how many pixels sit at each brightness level (0-255). The horizontal axis is brightness — dark on the left, bright on the right — and the vertical axis is the number of pixels at that brightness.
By reading the histogram you can quickly tell whether an image is properly exposed, whether its contrast is high or low, and whether the colors are shifted. It's one of the most common diagnostic tools in photography and design.
How to View an Image Histogram
Three steps to view your image histogram:
- Click the upload area and choose a local image (PNG, JPG, WEBP, or BMP supported).
- The histogram is generated automatically as soon as the image loads.
- Switch between RGB channels and brightness modes to inspect different dimensions of the color distribution.
Tips
- If the histogram leans left, the image is dark; if it leans right, the image is bright.
- In RGB mode, the overlap of the three channels indicates color balance — a strong shift toward one channel means a color cast.
- If the histogram is pushed against both edges with a hollow middle, the image has very high contrast.
